Artist statement:
My work is primarily based on organic forms, and the response to those forms of myself and the viewer. They were initially conceived as being purely intuitive and essentially spiritual, a withdrawal into the self.
Influences include Surrealism and the idea of `automatic writing,’ and Abstract Expressionism, although I make no attempt to convey feelings and emotion in the work. There are elements of oriental calligraphy and the work has become an exercise in meditation and contemplation, with me attempting to gain balance in my own mind and to achieve a balance of black and white on the canvas. There are no specific images to be seen – it is the work of the viewer to `see in’ the images.
More recently my work has been involved in the changing image of Blackpool and the documentation of it's regeneration.
